Capitol Hill Block Party: Day Two & Daft OMG Punk

I love Seattle, I do. If I didn't love Boston so much more, I'd probably be ordering moving boxes to be shipped to my Mission Hill apartment, and booking my one-way ticket. Aside from the glory of Top Pot doughnuts, cheap drinks, and a gorgeous skyline, the music from this town is simply matchless. I'm currently listening to the forthcoming Voyager One record, Afterhours In The Afterlife, and reminiscing from the second and final day of the Capitol Hill Block Party.

I'll say this - Against Me! had the most apeshit crowd of both days, and Spoon's set was as spotless as their song-writing. Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground is a local ten piece that I'm going to look into much much more once I return to my "headquarters," and The Cave Singers (with ex-Hint Hint, ex-Murder City Devils) and Grand Archives (.5 of Band Of Horses) were simply awesome. (Descriptive, I know).

All in all, I am terribly exhausted, but nothing can prepare me for...DAFT PUUUUUNNNKKK! Making the great voyage with many other folks from Boston to Keyspan Park in 2 weeks, my great fortune of seeing them this Sunday is complete insanity.

(OMG!)

Day One: Capitol Hill Block Party

Though the hometown reunion of the Murder City Devils in 2006 was enough to magnetize me to travel across the country, the 2007 installment of the Capitol Hill Block Party does not pale in comparison. With a familiar set-up, the line was formed before the doors opened at 3, and everyone was greeted with freezing cans of energy drinks. Kicking it off, really, were the Saturday Knights - a new signing to Seattle's Light In The Attic Records who are best known for their lauded Betty Davis re-issues and the very different caliber of the Austin psychedelic rock band (understatement galore), The Black Angels. File Saturday Knights, if you have or want to, under intelligent hip hop. Not quite as dark as El-P, the intellectual edge of SK's lyrics and song-writing are what magnify their presence on stage (the beach balls were a nice touch) and in the studio.

Going inside to Neumo's mainstage were two bands back to back that drew a crowd. Recent Loveless signing The Shackeltons were tearing up the stage as their lead singer was tearing up flowers, throwing them alongside his maddening professions and confessions that came out in arrhythmic, syncopated melodies that ran across the mathy, angular track that the band had laid out. Deep-suburban Pennsyltucky folks. Very impressive. The other band is no stranger to Onward Charles. Seattle localites The Blakes took the stage as the ink from their Light In The Attic record deal finished drying, and drew a packed audience into the main stage room. Throwing out some material that wasn't familiar to those that only know them by their most recent self-titled record (I thought it was called Let It Loose but that seems to just be a track...), you didn't know whether to keep your eyes on the near-identical features of brothers Garnett (vox/guitar) + Snow (bass/vox), or their drummer Bob, whom I'd seen in full costume at a Yacht Rock tribute show the night before at the very same venue (four words: that was fucking AWESOME).

I have to throw out some love, again, to Matt & Kim. I had a change to talk to Miss Kim before the block party, and it's so hard - you want to idolize these two, and be as starstruck as a sixteen year-old, but you just can't. Their set was similar to that at Siren, and Matt was kind enough to bare all from the waist up to not offend anyone in the audience with his sweat stains. Classic.

Today I'll be back at the Block Party, and I'm especially looking forward to The Cave Singers, which I hear is the new direction that Murder City Devil Derek Fudesco has taken the remains of the now-defunct Pretty Girls Make Graves. I'm tempted to check their MySpace before heading over there, but I think I'll savor the surprise...

Sorry for the lack of photos, btw...those will be up once I return to the East coast.

Raise Yo' Goddamn Kids!

This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life. Ever.

COMMENTS PLZ! :-O

Village Voice Siren Festival / Matt & Kim For The Win!

I wouldn't call myself a Naysayer, but in all honesty I am one of the folks who responds to the "So, how was Siren Fest?" questions with "Well, it's really not as good as it was two or three years ago..." To an extent, there's a heavy dose of truth in that, but there are times when it's really worth it - like seeing Matt & Kim sweat in excitement because they've never played to thousands of people at Coney Island...down the street from where they live. The newest (and most sincere) of indie rock darlings, the duo have earned their cred, and their live performance was nothing short of fulfilling. Best part was the stage banters, and "5K."

The crowd loved it:

Well, maybe not the guy in the visor, but when you're wearing a stupid visor like that, how can you really enjoy anything?

Let's not forget the setting of this year's Siren Festival (you know, 'cuz it's not like it changes locations every year...) - Coney Island. Anticipating the tear-down of the amusement park with great fear, locals made it out to ride the rickety Cyclone with warm hearts, and to dip their feet in the water (watch out for the glass!)

If they hold this again next year, be sure to go. It's always worth the trip, despite the fact that PBR's are four fricking dollars :-O

Love,
The OC

R.I.P. Tammy Faye - She Was A Fox (Sorta...Not Really)

This weekend, God wielded his mighty mascara wand and eliminated the voluminous personality of Tammy Faye Baker/Messner. Not quite music news, it's pop culture at its finest, and for those of you who do not know the deal behind Miss TF, Wiki does a finer job than most in the first paragraph:

Tamara "Tammy" Faye Messner (March 7, 1942 – July 20, 2007) was an American Christian singer, evangelist, entrepreneur, author, talk show host, and television personality. She was the former wife of televangelist, and later convicted felon, Jim Bakker, and she co-hosted with him on The PTL Club from 1976 to 1987. She was known for her tendency to wear heavy makeup, particularly mascara and false eyelashes, and her eyebrows were tattooed on. She was a participant in the 2004 season of the reality show, The Surreal Life.

Classy: The Tammy Faye Halloween mask...

The PTL Club, which was founded by her and husband Jim Bakker stood for Praise The Lord, and was saucy because of her personality and "more tolerant attitude when it came to homosexuals." Then...bankruptcy, scandal, embezzlement and infidelity (well, more like Jim Bakker drugged and raped Jessica Hahn in 1980)...

So, with all that said, another pop culture icon dies. Not as glamorous as Marilyn Monroe, Tammy Faye had many of the qualities that keep the notorious legacy of a celebrity forever walking the thin line between A-list and B-list (thanks, reality TV).

And finally...Miss Tammy Faye herself. Whoop whoop!

The Knife : Silent Shout Deluxe Edition CD/DVD

I don't remember how I first heard The Knife, but I do know that I sit here, roughly a year and a half after my first listen, and my dog is completely hypnotized by "Like A Pen." It wasn't until "Silent Shout" was fully in effect that it seemed like her head was nodding about with the rhythm.

For months, I've been waiting for the deluxe edition of Silent Shout - the record that was nearly everyone's favorite (from Pitchfork to the OC) for 2006. I can safely say that before and still, I've never heard anything like it before, and sitting here with vibrations riding up my feet and filtering out through my fingers, it's never sounded better. Watching the DVD - both videos and a live performance from Stockholm in 2006 - listening to the "Live Audio Experience" (an audio version of said live performance), and the mastered version of Silent Shout (I've been rocking an mp3 burn I got through a friend of a friend of a...), it is by far the best 18.99 I ever spent at Other Music.

Undoubtedly, this is still the best record of 2006, and if it were allowed I'd probably sneak it into my top ten for 2007. (Fortunately, though, there has been a great number of records released in the last 7 months...well, enough for a top TEN, at least). "Like A Pen" and "Silent Shout" still give me chills, and having the video to accompany the haunting live rendition of "Heartbeats," and finally...a live version of "You Make Me Like Charity" that I not only can stand, but love.

The winner here, though, is the live version of "Kino" - a track that survived the criticism of their self-titled debut LP's mediocrity with praise. Fucking killer, man...

Dirty Projectors Get Damaged On Tour

The Dirty Projectors will be touring the states this fall to support the release of their forthcoming LP, Rise Above on the label Dead Oceans (out Sept. 11). A re-imaging of Black Flag's Damaged album, DP mastermind Dave Longstreth went to help his parents move out of his childhood home after the release of the 2006 EP New Attitude, and coming across the cassette case of the old influence opened the floodgates. With the cassette itself missing, Longstreth decided to buy a four-track, and recasted Damaged without re-listening to a single note or reading any lyrics. Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges (one of my all-time favorite writers - if you haven't read Ficciones then shame on you/get to a library now), this record was completed with the help of Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor to give it the same sound quality that was lauded on his own band's release, Yellow House.

Tracklist:
1.What I See
2.No More (MP3)
3.Depression
4.Six Pack
5.Thirsty and Miserable
6.Police Story

8.Spray Paint (The Walls)

10.Rise Above

The band will be joined at different points on the tour by pals Vampire Weekend, YACHT, White Rainbow, Lucky Dragons, Nat Baldwin and Ecstatic Sunshine.

Sao Paolo : Bijari

For the last 11 years, ten artists from Sao Paolo, Brazil, have been working together digital art that speaks volumes about their culture and views on the world around them. Considered VJs and Multi-Media artists, they are respected throughout their country and have also worked on hi-profile projects such as Nike, Red Bull, Heineken, etc.

One of their more recent banners, hanging in Sao Pao is this:

Reads: "We have alcohol (ethanol) to sell and give you", the second line you can read yourselves. (Thanks to Ari, a.k.a. the lovely DJ Volvox of Boston, for this.)

Grand Scott! Cuiz + Orgazzzzmeek Invade Boston.

Saturday, August 4th, Boston is in for a great treat. Cuizinier and DJ Orgasmic of the French techno/rap group (is that what they call 'em now?) TTC will be at Great Scott in Allston. Playing the Hiro Ballroom in New York City, the more intimate setting of GS will be perfect. Also in tow is our very own Red Foxxworth. This will definitely be incredible, and considering it's not yet listed on the Great Scott website nor TTC's MySpace (it's on openers Genevan Heathen's page, and was listed in a recent TTC MySpace bulletin), it'll probably be a last minute promotion.

Crystal Castles + Health Release Split

CRYSTAL CASTLES // HEALTH marks HEALTH's first release on Lovepump United and features two new songs from the Toronto 8-bit glitch duo Crystal Castles. Both bands have been extraordinarily busy the past year with HEALTH relentlessly touring and self-recording their debut full-length in L.A.'s The Smell and Crystal Castles remixing everyone from Bloc Party to Liars to Klaxons and releasing a sold out 7” on Merok Records in the UK. In the middle of all of this they somehow found time for each other and for Lovepump United and for you.

Quite Scientific Unleashes "A Cork Tale Wake"

Within the first 30 seconds of hearing "Every Wall You Own," I wondered if Chris Bathgate was from the Ann Arbor area. (RLY!) 'Lo and behold, he very much is, and that predictability is more my freakish singer-songwriter associations and more with a sound that seems to grow from that area from the midwest. Nevertheless, Bathgate's songs are simple but magnetic, and his voice is simply divine. He's playing in and around the Ann Arbor area for the rest of the summer, with one stint at the Mercury Lounge on July 20th in New York City.

Matters & Dunaway : New Track

They're definitely a duo with a small but devout following around the country. Matters & Dunaway create a lush electronic collection of songs that often include synth-pop, live drumming, and breathy vocals. More atmospheric than danceable, they'll be showing off songs from their new EP at Great Scott on July 16th when they open up for The Field (stoked).

Thanks to the Boston Phoenix's awesome blog, On The Download I have an mp3 to steal. Mwahahaaa.

Bouncement: DJ Rupture Returns To Boston

Beat Research, the long-running Monday night riddim-fest at the Enormous Room, throws its second superparty (Bouncement!) this time in association with Basstown Presents and Great Scott.

DJ /rupture (aka Jace Clayton) called Boston home for years before blowing up on the international stage. A longtime friend to the Beat Research core, Clayton was an original member of Boston's legendary Toneburst Collective party squad. Usually DJing on 3 turntables and with samplers, gear and CD players, too, Clayton has found a home on such world-respect labels as Tigerbeat 6. He's played and lived nearly everywhere and recently returned to NYC where he runs his own label: Soot Recordings.

The first-ever Bouncement at the Linwood transformed a metal venue into a booming dance club, and Part 2 won't be much different. Headlined by such an accomplished and Boston-bred artist as DJ /Rupture, we expect madness.

Basstown and Beat Research present:

Johnny Cash Gets Remixed By Zeh Fronch!

Remixes are human, but remixes of Johnny Cash songs are divine. With that said, this isn't one of the best remixes I've heard, but for what it's worth, it's a hell of a take on the epic, "God's Gonna Cut You Down," the single from the latest collection - American: V - which featured a slew of celebrities with their "Grrrr!" faces in woodsy settings in black and white. While it's very Cash-y, I feel that if he were still alive he'd say, "Fellas, c'mon now...this is bogus."

You know, I'm usually not one for the poppy von pop, but Peel are pretty fucking (sorry Mom) good. Based out of Austin, they seem to be getting a lot of attention from the tastemakers galore, and I can see why. Very catchy. Maybe if the Dandy Warhols never touched drugs they could have invented this sound. Definitely a draw from the influences of greats amongst Beach Boys or The Rentals. Very good summer music.

New Stars Track (hoooo!)

Stars - who reached a level of semi-fame when Rolling Stone placed them just within the mark for the Top 50 of the moment records sometime in mid-2005 for their stellar sophomore LP, Set Yourself On Fire - will be releasing another full-length on September 25th by the never-disappointing Arts & Crafts label. The first track, "The Night Starts Here" is probably not the best appetizer for those that have never dined on Stars (first two tracks of SYOF, for sure), but the wavering synthesizer that moves in and out and up and down throughout the song is an interesting addition to compliment the dueling, soft vocals of Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell. A true gem from the Montreal indie scene, this band stands strong alongside the likes of The Dears and Arcade Fire.

The Living Sea Rearranges

I'm keeping my eye on The Living Sea, a Boston band by way of Beverly origins that have undergone some big changes over the last year. Together for a bit longer than that, they've come a way, and are continuing to grow into that solid, harmonious chemistry. Thing is...we music lovers always discover these bands just when they've formed that amalgam of talent, or weeks/months/years after ignoring our friends going "OMG d00d you've got to check out this band!"

For once, do yourself a favor and sink your teeth into this band now. I do believe it's going to be big.

New Smashing Pumpkins Track : Starz

The new Smashing Pumpkins is growing on me at an exponential rate. It wasn't that I didn't care, and yes I was a bit turned off by this, but upon receiving Zeitgeist I nearly screamed in gratitude. For what it's worth, there are some downs - mainly that the production is crap due to the huge difference between a handful of songs. If you compare "Starz" and "Doomsday Clock," there is a noticeable difference. As far as cheezeball status, I have yet to find anything within Corgan's lyrics on such a heavily political album. Also, the guitar solo towards the end of "Pomp And Circumstances"...yes.

Is it really true that he's living in a wing of Courtney Love's house? Remember when they were boinking in the 90s?
