Time Is Like A Bullet From Behind

Ellen Allien will be part of the Sonar 2006 roster this year, celebrating her most recent release with Apparat, titled Orchestra Of Bubbles. Her fabulous label, the Berlin-Based Bpitch Control, also put out her last full-length, Thrills in 2005.

For those of you not familiar with overseas festivals, Barcelona's annual Sonar festival is arguably the greatest electronic and new media festivals. Acts can be major and/or legendary (i.e. Aphex Twin, Bjork, Massive Attack), but the festival is often primed by its lengthly list of performers that are up-and-coming with expectations to never really "make it big." They're artists and rule-breakers (i.e. Prefuse73, Jamie Liddell, etc.) that are constantly reshaping independent and unique music soundscapes.

This year, notable acts include:
Goldfrapp
The Knife
Jimmy Edgar
Tiga
Liars
Modeselektor [also bpitch control]
Nobukazu Takemura

Ellen recently played two shows in the U.S., and will probably not return for quite some time. Being one of the quickest electronic artists to catapult themselves into my pool of favorites, Ellen's tracks are unlike most dance music that I've heard, providing soundtrack to the most dramatic and exciting moments of life. Her long involvements with the music scene in Berlin shines through with each new record that she puts out, and I can only hope that she gains more attention in the states as our country struggles - in the vein of electronic music - to catch up to what's going on in the rest of the world.
