Oh "Brother" Where Art Thou?

Ahh, Apex, North Carolina - home of many a legendary bands such as...hmm.

I've driven from New York to Atlanta and back, flown both ways more than a handful of times, and constantly have my eye on the many unheard of towns that my favorite infantile, indie bands pass through. Never in my years has "Apex" been mentioned, but the name is fitting if you take a moment to listen to Annuals.

Adam Baker, the "architect" of Annuals, is only 19 goddamn years old...

Goddamn this shit is good! Opening track "Brother" starts off quiet and nearly inaudible, which aroused a bit of an "Ok, we'll see if I even make to the end of the first one" sentiment. I shouldn't be so quick to judge though, as the deep south, front porch, late night mosquito and frog hum is similar to the track that opens up the best album (Meadowlands) by one of the best prevailing indie bands (Wrens). Breaths away from the two minute mark, the song launches into a gorgeous, bombastic marching rhythm that reminisces the kind of rise that happens upon one's very first listen of the Arcade Fire.

Touring with Art Brut (awesome) and Tapes n' Tapes (please die), I can't even begin to imagine how their sound may translate to a live setting. You know, I never cared too much for the Flaming Lips, but I may just like this band more...
