"For the last time, it's not her name!" read the caption in this week's Weekly Dig under the photo promoting Asobi Seksu's free show at Tuft's Oxfam Cafe. The band name actually stands for "playful sex," and it's an interesting title for a sound that is very much a nurturing drone n' roll take on the Deerhoof sound that has escalated in the last few years.
I first saw the band at Great Scott back in May, but the sound was extensively better in the small cafe on the ground floor of a Tuft's University dorm. At their last Boston show, the band was drowning in their own volume, but Thursday night - despite rental van issues that brought buckets of stress along with their late arrival and rushed setup - the sound was as clear as one would hope for, and gave a much better sense of what the band should sound like in a live setting. Definitely worth checking out.
