Wasted Guy at Coachella

While I'm not one for jumping on the bandwagon, I simply couldn't pass this up. The title says it all.

WTF // Your Demise Held at Gunpoint at US-Canadian Border...Jack Bauer Style

UK hardcore outfit Your Demise have been playing a string of dates along the Canadian-American border, and all was going fine until this past weekend. Not 15 kilometers (that's about 10 miles, Yanks) from the US border, the band decided to visit a Tim Horton's and feast on bagels and coffee. Slowly slipping into a food coma, the band was pulled over and individually held at gunpoint after being told to get out of their vehicle. "So we get out in the freezing snow, on the ground, and the cop starts to search the van," the band said on their Tumblr page. "I mean it was like 24/Jack Bauer shit."

It turns out that the driver in the car in front of Your Demise had just shot someone. "The Police where responding to [the incident] and thought it was us, when in theory they got the wrong car/van," the band added. "So...an eventful last night in Canada."

Your Demise will continue their run of US tour dates (they have a fucking lot), and before they begin touring with Unearth on the Atticus Metal Tour II or the variety of shows they have lined up through early June, you can catch them at SXSW or even right here in New York.

Rough Waters For Wavves

Please let this be an example that hyping bands way too soon, before they even hatch, is a bad idea. We all KNOW this, but the industry pumps it out and the fans continue to consume. Pitchfork, who drove a lot of Wavves hype (also, when did they drop a "v" from their name?) from the get-go, should have known better. Why? Did lo/no-fi need a surge? Was there a lack of "it" genres?

Rather than regurgitate, start here: Wavves Self-Destruct In Barcelona

Also, this is brilliant. I lol'd :D

Summer / Supply

Is it wrong that I'm far too excited to be getting a Facebook URL come the end of the week? Please don't tell anyone...

Onward Charles does, in fact, have a Facebook presence, but it really should be updated more often. It's rather bare, but this is definitely a part of Facebook that hasn't been given much love on the design/aesthetic sides. Still please feel free to become a fan here.

This summer, much of our updated will be stemming from a gorgeous area of Long Island, better known as Fire Island. Over the last few weeks, as much Internet research on Point O' Woods possible has been made, but the private community is fairly...well, private. Imagine a country club that is an entire town, rather than a gated, oversized restaurant/golf course combo. The NY Sun feature on real estate and POW was very informative, but before my eyes graced this paradise (where cars are not allowed!) that is only accessible by private ferry I read the NY Times expose from 1988 and fell in love a bit.

Lastly, you know how much I love stupid products, and whilst searching for a 4-cup coffeemaker on the Bed Bath website, I came across THIS complete waste of money. I thought the nob was for inflation, which is always good for space-saving, but...a reading light?

When have you EVER found yourself on a train, plane or automobile and thought "Man, I really wish my pillow had a BOOKLIGHT IN IT."? Truly...come on now. If someone sat next to me on a flight and had this, I would surely tell the first friend I saw and in a very snarky fashion.

First of all, this is fucking ridiculous.

Secondly, you might remember when Bitch was in the dumps back in September.

Well the guillotine is upon Paste Magazine, truly one of the best pubs in the music industry. I would be rightly sad to see this magazine go. My time as a publicist was spent very close to this company - especially due to the personal connections I used to have to Atlanta/Decatur.

"The global recession has taken its toll on Paste as advertisers have slashed their spending. We are turning to our readers to help bridge the gap. Even a small contribution can make a big difference."

Just like Bitch is essential to the feminist community in America, Paste is a key player in independent rock music. Their coverage has been top-notch. I often wonder if I have ADD because I am constantly falling asleep or getting fidgety when I try to read long articles and books (many tell me I'm just too busy for my own good), but Paste is a magnet. An eyeball magnet.

Please help the cause. This is very important.

Stupidity, Alcohol and More Alcohol

FlowingData is a site on my personal RSS that I don't actually look at on a daily basis. It's reserved for late nights such as this where I'm not entirely prepared to go to sleep and I want to fill my brain with interesting but extremely trivial information about the world around me. FlowingData is also good for situations like this on late nights because it often offers snazzy visuals to make you go "ooooh."

I find this particular chart to be of most interest. I don't fully endorse it, and as friend commented that it is definitely a "touchy subject," I don't know...I wish Nickelback was much lower. (Literate/college graduates like Nickelback? Really?) Titled "Music That Makes You Dumb" it crosses genre with average SAT scores. The intro paragraph reads:
Virgil Griffith, a CalTech graduate student, follows up books that make you dumb with music that makes you dumb. "Dumb" people listen to Lil' Wayne and "smart" ones listen to Beethoven, that is, if you believe that SAT is a good judge of smarts. I'm not sure if this is actually new or just became popular again because it was in the WSJ. Virgil put up the book version over a year ago. Oh well, it's Friday. I'm personally all over the board on this one. What kind of music do you like?

For my source, you can go here. Two other charts that caught my eye was the world map of legal drinking ages (if any), and a display of where you can actually find the best beer in America.

Virginia Is For Lovers. Slanties Are For Assholes.

Whether I like or dislike something, I'm going to write about it here. Also, I especially prefer to explain myself when I highly dislike something because otherwise I really don't see why you would care otherwise. Why read the blog to find out what I do or do not like? It's more relevant to know the "Why" because it might open you up to a new idea. My subjects are usually tangible products, but the surrounding idea is priceless.

However, this post is an exception.

These are "slanties."
These are the hot new thing that might replace shutter shades once they launch in Baltimore on the 17th of this month.
THESE ARE FUCKING RETARDED AND IF YOU WEAR THEM YOU WILL LOOK LIKE AN ASSHOLE.

That's really all I have to say about that.
Don't be an idiot.

The Chicken Of Thor

Aside from music, I love sharing random bits of fashion, function, politics and culinary wonders, but sometimes there are animated .gifs that are so awesome that I just want to post and say: LOOK AT THIS BRILLIANCE!

Found on Best Message Board Ever, which you can't see anyway because you don't have an account :-0
